Eleftheria Arvanitaki
Eleftheria Arvanitaki has established herself in the Greek art scene, with a rich career that spans more than 40 years, while her music and fame have crossed the country’s borders. Her career began in 1979, when she became a member of the Opisthodromiki Kompania, a group of students who played rebetika and folk, amateur, in various centers in Athens. She made her debut in the discography with the band, participating in Vangelis Germano’s album entitled “Ta Mparakia”. In 1984 she released her first solo album entitled “Eleftheria Arvanitaki”, where she sang old songs by Tsitsanis, Kaldaras, Chiotis, Chryssinis and others. At the same time, Opisthodromiki Kompania released the album “Sti Mesi Tis Kompanias”, while she participated in Dionysis Savvopoulos’ album “Trapezakia Exo”. A year later, the band disbanded and she began her solo career, participating in Stavros Logaridis’ album “Me Ta Feggaria Chanomai”, as well as the soundtrack of the film “Mania” by George Panousopoulos. Her career in discography is rich and manifold, with albums and songs that have set milestones in Greek music. Indicative are the albums “Kontrampanto”, “Meno ektos”, “Tanirama”, “Ta Kormia Kai Ta Mahairia”, “Ola Sto Fos”, “Dromoi Paralliloi”, “Kai ta Matia Kai I Kardia”, “Mi Fevgeis, Mi Meneis” and “Ta Megala Taxidia”. Besides, she has released live albums and has participated in other artists’ albums. She has performed in the most important music festivals in Greece and in places such as the Herodeion, the theater of Epidaurus and Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall, as well as in the biggest music scenes. Also, she participated in the closing ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 and in the performance “Hours” by the great American composer Philip Glass, while she collaborated on stage with Cesária Évora, with whom she made the duet “Sodade”. Her live shows and tours are always sold out. Equally important is her career outside Greece. Among others; in November 1997 she was featured on the cover of the English magazine “Folk Roots”, the world’s most famous magazine for ethnic and folk music, she has performed at WOMAD, the world’s largest ethnic festival, she has sung at events and venues such as The Jerusalem International Festival, the SFINKS ethnic festival in Belgium, the Queen Elisabeth Hall in London, the La Cigale in Paris and the historic Carnegie Hall in New York, while she was the only Greek singer to take part in the Millenium End Festival in Barcelona, in a concert with Carlos Nunez and among artists like Jose Carreras, Madredeus and Maria Del Mar Bonet, as well as in the “Giubileo della Terra (Jubilee Earth)” in Rome, a music event organized by the Vatican. Also, her songs “Sapfo” and “Ta Kormia kai Ta Mahairia” have been included in the international album “Gifted – Women of the World”, with eight great female voices from around the world.
